James Hopes and Martin Love returned Queensland to working order after Brendan Drew’s five wickets denied them first-innings points and they made a woeful start to their follow on. Hopes was unbeaten on 74 and Love on 64 when a rainstorm halted their progress with Queensland still trailing Tasmania by 31 runs. The Bulls were 4 for 153 at the close having collapsed to be all out for 144 in their first innings. The second attempt began just as poorly; they were 4 for 24 in the tenth over. But Hopes and Love added an unbeaten 129 for the fifth wicket, aided by a hamstring injury to Adam Griffith, who had snared 2 for 14 in the opening stages.Queensland resumed at 4 for 97 with hopes of overhauling Tasmania’s 328 but Drew claimed 5 for 30 – his second five-for in first-class cricket – to have the visitors back in the dressing room and padding up for a second innings. Jimmy Maher resisted with 52 but he had little help and the Bulls lost their last five wickets for 19.
